About Georgetown

Just 20 minutes north of Austin on IH-35, Georgetown combines the best of small-town living with easy access to big-city amenities. And with the new Georgetown Rivery and Wolf Ranch Mall, Georgetown residents no longer need to drive to Austin for great shopping, restaurants and entertainment options.

Founded in 1848, Georgetown maintains the ambience of earlier years with its historic downtown, named a “Great American Main Street Award winner in 1997. Many downtown buildings and Georgetown homes are listed on the National Historic Register. Georgetown is the Williamson County seat. Residents can hike and bike along 3.5 miles of trails around the North and South San Gabriel Rivers, fish and ski on Lake Georgetown, and golf on some of Central Texas’ finest courses.

Population

The secret is out on Georgetown’ historic charm, natural beauty and accessibility. Since 2000, population has grown from 28,000 to nearly 42,000. Residents range from active retirees, to young families. Median age is 36.9 years, with a median household income in 2000 of $54,000.

Schools

Georgetown ISD's 15 campuses serve 9,000 students. The district encompasses nine elementaries, three middle schools, two high school campuses and three alternative schools. In addition, Georgetown in home to the Texas’ oldest college, Southwestern University, built in 1873. Just a short commute away is Texas State University’s Round Rock Higher Education Center.
